Customer Service Representative

Occupational Summary:
Assist customers with questions, concerns and problems regarding book orders, subscriptions and payments via phone and e-mail.

This position is a level 6 Job Family 3 with a University Job Code of 0124, Clerk V. Job Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Remain logged into phone pool during normal business hours. Answer phones, assist customers, and if necessary redirect calls to the appropriate department or staff member at the Press. Respond to customer questions in accordance with general instructions and office protocols.
  • Fill claims and manage requests for information, which may arrive via mail, email, phone, and fax.
  • Apprise supervisor of any unusual or problematic situations concerning customer requests or their accounts. 

Order Entry

  • Journals : Enter orders and establish new accounts when necessary. Process all paper and e-mail customer address change requests, prepare customer quotes and handle general e-mail requests.
  • Books : Enter trade, course and Free book orders. Pay special attention to discount schedules and establish new accounts when necessary. 

Miscellaneous

  • Screen, sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail and documents; process mail or documents in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Printing and sorting of daily invoices.
  • Take initiative in monitoring and reporting any problems with the global database. Contribute wherever possible to the overall improvement of the Fulfillment Department.
  • Assist warehouse, books marketing, and journals marketing on special projects. 

Experience

Work requires two years of related customer service/fulfillment experience to become familiar with accepted office, organization, and communications practices. Proven ability to contribute productively in a team environment.

Journals Marketing Project Specialist

 

 

The purpose of this position is to increase non-subscription and subscription revenue through collaborative work with Journals Marketing department. The JMPS reports to Assistant Manager.

Assistant Managing Editor
Humanities & Social Science (H&SS) Journals

Summary: The Assistant Managing Editor oversees the editorial processes for a set of journals primarily, but not exclusively, in the humanities and social sciences. Responsibilities include in-house copyediting; coordinating, reviewing, and correcting freelance copyediting and proofreading; incorporating authors' edits; ensuring high editorial quality; observing schedules; and working with production coordinators. Other duties may be assigned, such as copyediting marketing publications and Web content.

I. Oversees editorial process for a set of DUP journals
1. Performs in-house copyediting and proofreading as needed.
2. Reviews manuscripts for editorial and production problems. Oversees freelance copyediting of manuscripts.
3. Locates and engages freelance copyeditors and proofreaders; provides guidance to resolve technical and stylistic questions; evaluates quality of work.
4. Reviews page proofs for editorial and production problems. Oversees freelance proofreading.
5. Crossmarks manuscripts and proofs; adjudicates the corrections of authors, editors, and freelancers.
6. Works closely with Production Coordinators to resolve questions of design and schedules.
7. Ensures that editorial schedules and standards are met; coordinates activities with staff in the Journals Division to ensure the timely production of issues.
8. Updates and maintains style guides for a set of journals.

We are seeking workstudy students to provide help with the following tasks:

  • preparation of pre-publication publicity materials, including advance page proofs and media kits
  • filling requests for review copies from print and electronic media
  • preparation of sales materials intended for use by our sales representatives in the U.S. , Canada , England , and Asia
  • research and preparation of our seasonal advertising plans
  • scanning of artwork for direct mail and subject area catalogs
  • routine office support, including filing, photocopying, and database management

Books Design & Production Department Intern/Duke Student

Works with manuscripts submitted by authors. We edit and design them and produce beautiful books.
We need student workers to help with:

• Checking editorial corrections
• Proofreading book indexes
• Determining length and cost for finished books
based on manuscript length and complexity
• Scanning and sizing photographs and
artwork to be used in books
• Returning art to authors when books are completed


We provide training for all these tasks and no previous editorial or design experience is required. However, if you have experience using a scanner or
doing editorial work, please let us know. If you are comfortable working in Microsoft Word, can use a calculator, and have a commitment to accuracy,
we would love to talk to you! The hours are extremely flexible. We are looking for students who can work 5-12 hours per week during normal business hours
(Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm).

Logistics Coordinator Intern/Duke Student 5-10 hours per week

 

Description: This position will work with the Logistics Coordinator with special projects, budget, filing, data base entry and computer drawings.

Responsibilities will include (but not limited to)

Help to physically implement new initiatives for organization

Help to create and populate databases for new initiatives for organization.

Researching and tagging of office furniture, file cabinets and relocation as needed.

Assist in creation of Visio layout of Duke Press offices

Editorial Assistant Intern/Duke Student

The Duke University Press books acquisitions editorial department is looking for interns.  Our department works with authors from the idea stage up to the point where the manuscript is copyedited and designed, so this internship provides an excellent chance to learn a lot about how we choose projects, the peer review process, art selection, manuscript formatting, permissions, and preparing projects for the Editorial Advisory Board.  Interns will have opportunities for involvement at each of these steps.  We are looking for interns to work as little as 5 hours per week or as much as 40 hours per week.  Applicants should be comfortable with office work, detail-oriented, and willing to work in a fast-paced environment.  Familiarity with the academic fields in which we acquire is helpful.
