The major purpose of the Social Science History Association (SSHA) is to improve the quality of historical explanation, particularly by encouraging the selective use and adaptation in historical teaching and research of relevant theories and methods from related disciplines, particularly the social sciences. Members of the SSHA share an interest in interdisciplinary and systematic approaches to historical research. The association publishes a quarterly journal, Social Science History, and conducts an annual conference for the presentation of new research.
