Puerto Rico has been a US colony for close to 120 years, and it was a Spanish colony for about four centuries before that. From a variety of economic, political, and cultural angles, this issue explores the realities and legacies of colonial experiences and the complex relationships of present-day Puerto Rico to the United States, Latin America, and the rest of the world. It also focuses on the long, multifaceted resistance of Puerto Rican peoples to colonialism and postcolonialism.
