Manchester University Press Appoints Duke University Press to Represent E-book Collections in North America

October 19, 2026

Manchester University Press (MUP) has appointed Duke University Press (DUP) to represent its e-book collections across the United States and Canada, bringing together two university presses with strikingly similar publishing missions and a shared belief in the role scholarship can play in understanding and challenging the world around us.

The partnership will see DUP actively promote Manchester University Press's e-book collections to librarians across North America through its established library sales program.

Both presses have built international reputations for publishing scholarship that engages critically with contemporary society. Across the humanities and social sciences, their lists are united by a willingness to ask difficult questions, challenge received wisdom and examine how power operates across politics, culture, history and everyday life. It is a publishing philosophy rooted in intellectual curiosity, critical inquiry and the search for meaningful answers to complex problems.

“We are uniquely positioned to represent Manchester University Press because we share a commitment with them to publish books that are intellectually rigorous and engage the most important questions of our time,” said Dean Smith, Director of Duke University Press. “We are excited to help MUP’s books reach more scholars, students, and readers in North America.”

Chris Hart, Sales and Marketing Director at Manchester University Press, said:

"When you work with a partner that shares your values and understands the realities of the market, it creates a genuinely collaborative relationship. Duke is not just representing our collections, they are helping introduce librarians to MUP as a publisher, our mission, our authors and the thinking that sits behind our program."

"I've long admired Duke University Press and the work they publish. There is a real overlap between our outlooks. Both presses are interested in exploring contemporary challenges and publishing scholarship that helps us better understand the world around us. That feels like a very natural fit and, in many ways, a very Manchester approach."

MUP collections will continue to be delivered through the Press's own platform, manchesterhive, while benefiting from DUP's long-standing relationships and trusted reputation within the academic library community.

This initiative is part of the Scholarly Publishing Collective.

The Scholarly Publishing Collective is a collaboration between nonprofit scholarly publishers and societies that is managed by Duke University Press. Through the Collective, publishers have access to resources that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive, such as a best-in-class web platform, proven customer relations and library sales and relations teams, and a network of global sales agents with insight into university press content.
