Contributors to this special issue explore the “bad objects” that mark academic feminist practice—methods, material items, figures, and thinkers that feminism has disavowed, jettisoned, or relegated to the past. Asking who and what becomes “bad” and when, the authors consider how we narrate and grapple with bad objects of various sorts instead of feminism’s “proper objects.” Rather than disavow or rehabilitate the objects covered in their essays, the authors seek to engage with the histories, methods, and theories of bad objects.
