While the formation of the European Union in 1992 meant greater political and economic integration, health care was clearly designated as a national matter only. In the ensuing years, however, health care has increasingly come under the jurisdiction of broader EU policies. This issue examines how and why this has happened, and discusses what this increasing integration means for public health care within and between EU states.
