The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle

The letters in this volume cover December 1875 through February 1881, including 80 letters dictated by Thomas Carlyle, 11 letters written by Mary Aitken or Alick Carlyle at TC's request, 12 letters written by Mary Aitken to friends and family members that give useful information about TC's health and activities, and a final letter from Alick Carlyle giving details of TC's death and funeral. TC's shaky hand had by now become so bad that he had entirely given up writing anything, and toward the end he even gave up signing his letters.
