We are at a moment when scholars are told to focus on beauty or crunch big data and not think about ugly social problems, when protestors are told to go home and stop disturbing the so-called peace, when workers are called “essential” yet devalued via unlivable wages. This messaging is so pervasive in our society that to call it partisan politics or government propaganda is insufficient. Only one word is strong enough to describe the destructive and dehumanizing mandates of our capitalist society: ideology. This latest volume of South Atlantic Quarterly, called “The Ideology Issue,” collects a diverse and representative set of authors who model the critique of ideology needed for today.

Contributors: C. D. Blanton, Andrew Cole, Mladen Dolar, Hal Foster, Alexander Galloway, Caren Irr, Eleanor Kaufman, Anna Kornbluh, Colleen Lye, Warren Montag, Bruce Robbins, Audra Simpson, Hortense Spillers, Robert Tally, Jr., Alenka Zupancic
