This special two-part issue of the Federal Sentencing Reporter captures the momentum sparked by the U.S. Sentencing Commission’s 2024 national roundtable on federal drug sentencing reform. Part two offers thoughtful analyses of recent federal drug sentencing reforms and seeks to spark a broader conversation about future change. Judges, scholars, and practitioners reflect on how the new reforms could impact excessively punitive drug sentencing, possible replacements to drug quantity as the touchstone for culpability, and many more pressing questions. They address unresolved challenges that remain following this amendment cycle, including how the Commission should approach the safety valve provision, disparities in methamphetamine sentencing, emerging concerns around fentanyl sentencing, and other unsettled issues.
