Duke University Press Journal Updates
We are pleased to announce the relaunch, after a 30-year pause, of Black Sacred Music as an open access journal. Black Sacred Music explores projects comprising both traditional and new approaches to black sacred music. While most of the scholarly works engaging in this area of study are Christocentric, this journal opens the conversation across disciplinary and faith lines. By expanding the boundary of blackness beyond the confines of African American, the journal examines pan-African and global perspectives on race and ethnicity. Moreover, sacred notions in black spaces and bodies are reassessed by bringing into conversation Western and Africana worldviews. As a complement to written analysis, audio and visual material enhances the experience for the reader and helps scholars demonstrate the lived experiences of black sacred music among music practitioners and religious adherents. The first issue will be published in spring 2026.

Black Sacred Music will be included in the e-Duke Journals Expanded collection. In 2025, DUP introduced Federal Sentencing Reporter and New Political Science, both also included in e-Duke Journals.

The Journal of Asian Studies will increase to five issues per volume, beginning with volume 85.

Duke University Press e-Book Collection Updates

  • Top Ups
Existing subject collection customers have the option to “top up” their subject collection by purchasing the year’s new batch of relevant titles. 2025 top-ups contain all relevant titles published in 2025. 2026 top-ups will be available in February 2026.
  • Purchase Partial Collections by Year
New customers who do not own the collection can purchase perpetual access to selected years, with a minimum purchase of three years of titles.

Direct to Open (D2O)
We are pleased to begin partnering with MIT Press in their innovative D2O framework for new release monographs that creates a collaborative, library-supported open access model. This partnership will allow Duke University Press to:

  • Bring open access to 20 new Duke University Press scholarly monographs annually via recurring participation fees.
  • Provide participating libraries with term access to 250 backlist/archival titles which will otherwise remain gated. Participating libraries will receive access even if the model is not successful.
  • Cover partial direct costs for the publication of high-quality works that are also available for print purchase.

For details on how your institution might participate in or support Direct to Open, please visit mitpress.mit.edu/D2O or contact the Duke University Library Relations team at dup_libraryrelations@duke.edu.
