Contributors to this special issue examine violence in Asia, arguing that the entangled structures of imperialization, colonization, and the Cold War turned Asian mediascapes into sites for recurrent and distorted confrontations with the past. The authors explore how violent experiences in Asia’s past and present are remembered, represented, and reproduced in the media. By focusing on audiovisual mediascapes, which have long been regarded as subservient to formal and written records the authors underpin new scholarship generated in Asia and foreground the imaginative and sensory specificities of violent encounters.
