Current Volume: 26

Frequency: 3 issues annually

Academic Editor: Jennifer L. Holberg

Pedagogy: Critical Approaches to Teaching Literature, Language, Composition, and Culture is an innovative journal that aims to build and sustain a vibrant discourse around teaching in English studies. In spite of the large role that teaching plays in the lives of most English studies scholars, no other mainstream journal in English devotes itself exclusively to pedagogical issues spanning the entire discipline. By contrast, Pedagogy covers all areas of English studies from literature and literary criticism to composition and cultural studies. It seeks to reverse the long history of the marginalization of teaching and of the scholarship produced around it. Fusing theoretical approaches and practical realities, Pedagogy is an essential resource for teachers.

To submit to Pegagogy, please visit our ScholarOne site: https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/dup-ped.

We do not accept submissions of manuscripts that have been previously published in any form or that are under review at another venue.

Currently, Pedagogy is accepting the following kinds of manuscripts for review:

  • Scholarly Essays: Traditional academic essays of no more than 10,000 words (inclusive of notes, bibliography, images, tables, appendices, etc)
  • Commentaries: Opinion pieces or editorial reflections between 3,500-8,000 words
Those interested in proposing a special issue are most welcome to write directly to the editorial office to begin a conversation.

All individual manuscripts received are initially reviewed by the editors for academic quality and fit with the journal’s mission.

The journal follows The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th ed., but at submission, manuscripts in MLA style are acceptable.

Manuscripts need to have demonstrated IRB approval in place (where required) as well as necessary permissions—and should include needed support documents upon submission.

By submitting to Pedagogy, authors acknowledge that the work submitted is theirs alone.

Manuscripts meeting these criteria are submitted to outside peer review. Pedagogy operates under a strict double-anonymized review policy. Therefore, all references to the author's identity, including the author’s publications, professional activities, and institutional affiliation, must be removed. Otherwise, the manuscript will be returned. Typically, all submissions are reviewed by a combination of editors, editorial board members, and field specialists.

Decisions about publication status are ultimately made by the editors in consultation with reviewer recommendations. In the case of “revise and resubmit,” journal policy is to return manuscripts to the original review team for re-evaluation. In general, Pedagogy does not pursue manuscripts beyond one round of re-review.

Submit all images and tables as separate files. Full guidelines about art preparation, including supplying alt text for all interior images, are part of Duke University Press’s submissions guidelines.

Send all editorial correspondence, including inquiries about reviews of scholarship, textbooks, and other teaching materials, to pedagogy@calvin.edu or Pedagogy, Department of English, Calvin University, 1795 Knollcrest Circle SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
